I couldn't quite see an exercise section on the forum so thought I'd pop it onto here.... If there is one and I'm being Huh then just *poke* me with a stick!

I have spent many a year with physiotherapists, to the point that when I have surgery and get referred to one, its so boring ThumbDown in fact, I've never known exercises to be so boring *yawn*

There are now a couple of hospitals that have got Nintendo Wii's. I bought one a year ago to help recover from hip surgery and it sure makes it more fun!

I just wondered if anyone uses one. I got the Wii Fit Plus today which apparently has a lot more to choose from and you can build your own plan to suit you.

To be honest, I find exercising hard. Mainly because I don't have the stamina at the moment, and I don't find the exercises given by my physio very exciting so lose motivation. Exercise DVDs are a nightmare because I can't bounce around like they do so often just stick to the warm up exercises as my routine. It would be brilliant if there was a fitness DVD for people with limited mobility, especially if the exercises can be done standing or sitting.

Will have to get my thinking cap on.... Wink

I often worry about lack of exercise Tig. I know a lot of people swim but to be honest, when I feeling really stiff, the thought of shivering on the side of the municipal pool then getting into the cold water fills me with dread so I've only been a few times. I do have an exercise bike I use when my hips/knees aren't too bad - sit pedling away like a demented hamster in front of the telly! Every bit helps BigGrin .

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with the Wii.

I've just had an e-mail from my daughter about the wii !
Apparently amazon are selling them for £135 and she was asking me if I thought she should buy one with money she got for doing some work for the uni.
I think that offer is too good to miss, so I might be exercising when she brings it home at xmas!

yes I do use the wii fitness I am going to take it with me to the MS meeting there is some-thing for every-one on it
the exercise seems to be good for me

My friend has just had a wii fit and she says it is brilliant!!\ThumpUp I am going to have a go on hers and if I can manage it get one for myself.

Oh tell me about it... just the thought of going to the local pool makes me shiver!! Unsure I usually end up walking like an ironing board when I get out!

Exercise bikes and me don't get on at all! Mainly because I'm only 4'9 and can't sit on the seat and reach the pedals at the same time RollEyes

Get her to also check the Game website as they have some good deals. My Dad has just ordered one from there plus they do their own brand of the controllers which works out cheaper.

If I ever win the lottery, I'm having my own hydrotherapy pool built... with its own aromatherapy jacuzzi Cool

Shall keep you posted on how I get on... maybe we could set up our own wii fit group Wink

Hi,

I have been given exercises to do by my physio and i M suppose to do them twice a day and I have only done them twice in 10 weeks. Its so hard to remember how to do them. I love swimming and despise the gym. I read somewhere pilates and taichi is recommended for people with RA. Its just getting into the routine.

I like the idea of aromatherpy jacquzzi and hydro pool and wii fit. ThumpUp

Tai Chi is wonderful and if you can find a local class to go to then definitely do it! Its very relaxing, gently stretches muscles & joints and I've found it helps balance.

I've not found a local class to join but I had the wonderful opportunity of doing a tai chi class while I was visiting China 5yrs ago... right in the middle of the park! Since then I try and just do a few exercises once a week to help me relax.

Routine is hard, especially if you're not that mobile or are having a bad day. Its also getting the motivation to do it, and lets face it, unless you have someone *poking* you to do it, its not that much fun.

Maybe we need to start up an exercise buddy system Laugh

I had a "taster" of Tai Chi at the NRAS activity day and found it very relaxing.
At the time I mentioned to my daughter that a Tai Chi exercise DVD would be good for a christmas present!
I wonder if she found one?

I was once advised to save all the money from private hydrotherapy sessions and buy a hot tub to do exercises in there.

I couldnt get in and out of one now!

never mind!

I think exercise is all well and good for those people who can. I cannot. It is enough for me to struggle through each day. TBH, probably should be resting more and just doing the full rotation with very severe disease.

I used to pay to use the Bupa pool at £6 a session.

But I had to pay someone to get me in and out etc

I know that the local hospital has a weekly evening session of hydro. If I wasnt struggling to hold life and limb roughly together with children etc then it might be a good option. Right now- its a no!

I do have a Wii fit and a board. it does not like my posture!

it would be good one day to be able to use it more. (its only been used by me once- the kids play horse riding on it!!!)

You can get a DVD on Tai chi for Arthritics ! I have one and it is very gentle and you can hold on to a chair if, like me, you are unsteady on your feet. You can do as little or as much as you are able.

Hi

I have a WiiFit and love it. But not the bit where it tells me I am overweight. I also swim and do deep water aquafit, which I find really helpful. I was referred to a physio recently as my knees aren't brilliant, but the exercises have really helped.

I agree with Jenni. Exercising depends to some exent on the severity of your illness and your level of mobility. I swim at the local health club, which I love, and do exercise with the help of a video for wheelchair users. As for pilates and stuff like that - it's OK for those who can stand witout sticks. For me it would be a disaster!!

i am mad about excise .
But i don,t have a moblie promlem at moment and not flareing

So i supose do it while i can do it .
i go too a private health club its very warm there and the pool is easy and you can relax .

and there is a large spa pool some people call it a hot tub .

but it has made a differance doing it .Walking and enjey leavels much better and also my arms
and the muscles in my legs ..

Spupid skin promlem is the only reason it might stop me going some times

I once had a dream that I had my own heated swimming pool in the garden, it was wonderful, very relaxing. Then I woke up. What a shame. I do like to swim but its so hard getting there and even worse trying to get dressed again, it hardly seems worth it. Glenys.

I Love my Wii. (Except as Black Cat says the part where it tells me I am over weight), and am finding it even better after buying the Fit Plus. I would love to go swimming, but at the moment, get tired out just getting there, let alone getting into the pool, so the Wii fits into my life.

Oh I just wish I could get my big fat butt into action, but it's hard fixed in one spot and won't shift. Before RA, I was in the gym x3 a week walked for miles as far as my feet would carry me.

I agree with Jean and Jenni, it depends on how active the RA is and severity of the disease. I used to love pilates, but now that my wrists are so bad, fatigue, and feet and without treatment any form of exercise for the moment is for me out of the question. I'd love to go back and will to my water aerobics classes once I'm sorted out with meds.

The Wii thingy sounds great and will look into it, is it like following and exercise DVD?
